Creating a Global Website

With the development of the internet, the way that businesses operate has dramatically changed and become, in many cases, global. In recent years, overseas outsourcing of labor and technological tasks has become common as business owners try to find less expensive ways to operate. The sale of products and services has also gone global as the world becomes a smaller place, in part because of the internet and the globalization of the web. As the world of business becomes more and more globally minded the importance of global communication and global websites increases.

The growth of the internet and the web has opened up all kinds of international markets that were not easily accessible just a few years ago. In today’s high tech world, a business, organization, or individual can instantly share information with people all around the world. The globalization of a website is one of the least expensive ways to begin international communications for business.

Just as in any other website a globalized website needs to be designed with the end user in mind. A global website poses more of a challenge than a localized website because it must consider the demographic diversity of a global audience. The website must have a global appeal and not be full of confused content and bad navigation, the site should function properly. When a website is not designed well and doesn’t function properly potential customers look elsewhere.

One of the top concerns of a global website is language barriers. If you want your website to really appeal to a global audience you can’t assume that everyone speaks your language. Instead your website needs to be available in a number of different languages so that potential customers understand your message.

That being said, beware of machine translators. Machine translation is the fastest, easiest, and least expensive way to translate a website. Many website owners choose this option. The problem is that when a machine is doing the translating not all things translate correctly. A machine can translate word for word but it doesn’t always translate the grammar and intent of the message correctly. It is best to use a human translator for a business website.

Along with a good translation a global website needs to have easy to use, transparent, navigation. If the navigation between pages isn’t clear then the user will get frustrated and leave the site. If the links do not direct the site visitor to the pages in their language they will find the site not useful.

Your website design and branding should be consistent on all of your site pages. Your logo for one country should be the same for another country, though maybe in a different language.

Designing a website with a global perspective will help your business or organization reach a much broader audience.
